• By introducing a weekly doorstep recycling collection of glass, paper, cardboard cans and now plastics, we have doubled Lewisham’s recycling rate to 14%.
• Becoming one of the first Fair Trade boroughs in London in March 2005.
• Leading the way on buying energy from renewable sources and achieving national recognition for our work on sustainable energy.
• Increasing the number of coveted Green Flag parks in Lewisham every year – there are now six Green Flag parks.
A Safer Lewisham For All
• Record numbers of police officers patrolling Lewisham streets today, in addition to the 62 street and neighbourhood wardens.
• There are eight Safer Neighbourhoods teams in Lewisham, and from April onwards every neighbourhood will have its own dedicated beat police team.
• Challenging local rail operators to make their stations safe for everyone who uses them.
• Tackling anti-social behaviour and making streets safer using specialist teams, wardens, CCTV and other measures to deter troublemakers.
A Brighter Future for Lewisham’s Young People
• We are investing in our schools, securing £200 million to rebuild or refurbish every secondary school and build a much-needed new school.
• Enhanced choice for school leavers by opening the start-of-the-art Crossways Academy
• Building on the success of the local Sure Start schemes and opening six Children’s Centres in 2006, giving Lewisham’s very young citizens the best start.
• We have created over 1000 childcare places.
• Directly running or working in partnership to provide 45 youth clubs, used by over 2000 young people every month.
• Pioneered the innovative Young Mayor project, giving young people a real taste of democracy and decision-making
• Half of Lewisham’s 15 year olds now get 5 good GCSEs – up 11% since 2002 and still rising.
• Our A’ Level pass rate continues to climb to 97%, is up 10% since 2002 and is now higher than the national average.
• Investing in school meals, improving the quality and increasing the take-up.
Keeping Lewisham Moving
• Making our roads better and safer with the biggest ever road resurfacing programme.
• Since 2002, 250 roads – over 38 miles – have been resurfaced and we have improved pavements and street lighting .
• Providing every resident with a safe, secure and decent home. Residents are already enjoying their new homes on Pepys, Honor Oak, Silwood, Sundermead and Kender estates, with Milford Towers and Heathside and Lethbridge to follow shortly.
• Transforming our town centres across Lewisham.
• Gaining better transport links with the rest of London with the DLR and soon the East London Line extension.
Health, Recreation & Leisure Opportunities
• We have invested in new sports and leisure facilities across Lewisham – skate parks, the Bellingham Gateway centre, Forest Hill sports hall and Downham Lifestyles.
• Providing grants and support to hundreds of community groups and projects.
• Making Deptford a renowned Creative Hub in London with its award winning high street and Laban Centre.
• Providing wireless-free access to the internet in all of Lewisham’s library.
• Improving and investing in pools at Lewisham town centre, Deptford, Downham and Forest Hill, so that by 2010 Lewisham will have five good quality swimming centres, at locations easily accessible for all the borough.
Making our Borough Cleaner
• Taking tough action against individuals who blight your neighbourhood with over 300 individuals prosecuted for fly-tipping, fly-posting and littering.
• Removing all abandoned vehicles within 1 day.
• Clearing off 66 miles of graffiti across Lewisham since 2002 and introduced innovative technology to help you report it.
• Increasing the reliability of the refuse service dramatically to 99%. |
